Spirit of a place

I have not noticed such a beautiful park only three minutes walk from my flat!!
This is Fishpond Park managed by Kingston Council. There are many old trees making a sense of place, and the pond is seems to be a valuable habitat for birds.

The Landscape Institute

I went to Landscape Institute Library to find some material for landscape management essay.
There were lots of leaflets and journals about nature reserve over my expectation. Furthermore, the staff of library kindly helped me to find out some articles about critical points of resent landscape management. It was so useful to overview landscape management from different view points.
When I went out from the library, Oxford street was crowded by people enjoying Christmas shopping.

Workday

On sunday, I participated in workday at Fishpond Wood & Beverley Meads (LNR). The volunteer work of that time was tree planting to create a shrub hedge! As it was second time for me to join this groupe, I could be relax and enjoy this activity. The process of planting is as follows:

1. Dig a hole which is deep enough to cover a roots ofsapling
2. Plant a sapling and cover its roots by soil
3. Cover the sapling by tree-cover to protect from mammal such as rabbits and deers
4. Cover the ground around the sapling with mould

Then, I tried to even cutting tree by the meadow to let in light into woods. The strategy is simple: leave big unique shaped trees and cut young trees obstructing the view to the meadow.
These activities were a good opportunity to learn landscape management, so I would like to continue joinning this monthly workday.

Climate Change Walk

The second day of climate change conference, I joined "Climate change walk" from Regents Park to Kings' Cross Station. During walking, I found different faces of London. A place have a remnant of old days, residents of ethnic minority, a nature reserve adjacent to a development area around Kings' Cross Station.

Climate Change Conference

I attended Climate Change Conference by Landscape Institute. It was after an interval of seven years to attend conference about climate change, it seems to be stepping forward slowly but steadly. Most people concern about environment whether they are optimistic or pessimistic.
The most interesting event for me was workshop about "Farming city". I like the idea to product food everywhere in a city to recover the relationship between people and food production. But on the other hand, I learned to need to consider social aspects to promote such kind of "community participation", as I heard in some case children vandalise plants each other.

Beverley Meads

I went to Fish Pond and Beverley Meads which is a part of Wimbledon Common to research for my landscape management report. It was bright sunny day, but I was worried about being myself alone in the woodland. Moreover, I was continue walking around same place as I could not find the way to exit. Then, suddenly I was chased by bulldogs!! How scared I was..

Eco-Luxury??

I attended Future LAB talk at MLT.
The talk seems to be related to fashion, but I was interested in the theme of tendency of consumer.
Although the cultual background of Britain and Japan are different, but it seems similar at the point of tendensy of consumer; they are seeking spiritual satisfaction rather than materials. However, I inclined my haed when I heard a word "Eco-Luxury"..luxurious services are ecological??

Subterranean chasm at Tate Modern

"Warning
Please watch your step in the Turbine Hall
Please keep children under supervision"

Now there are long subterranean chasm by sculptor across the Turbine Hall, Tate Modern. It seems risky challenge as children possibly drop into the chasm, but the wide range of people from small children and the old are attracted and traced the long route. Someone took pictures, and others strode over it. I was impressed that the challenge is succeeded in withdrawing people into even unusable area.

After visiting Tate Modern, I went to Design Museum to see the exhibition of Zaha Hadid. There are lots of beautiful models, plans, and graphic images. But rather I was interested in the design process from rough sketch to organic shape of architecture.
